Dr John Gabriel is a Lecturer in Musicology at the University of Melbourne. He completed his MA at the Freie Universität Berlin and his PhD at Harvard University, and he previously held appointments at the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Hong Kong.
His research focusses on music and culture in German and Czech speaking Central Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Current projects include a book on opera and music theatre in Weimar Republic Germany and an article on the figure of the dead and resurrected soldier in Gustav Mahler’s orchestral songs.
