About this performance

MSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop and Melbourne teenage legend Christian Li team up for this program celebrating prodigious musical talent.

  • The youngest ever recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for music, American composer Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte for string orchestra curiously peers at tried-and-true classical forms through a contemporary lens. The result? Lyrical and playful, with a touch of the absurd.
  • In a masterful display of virtuosity and musical maturity well beyond his years, Mozart wrote his Violin Concerto No.3 while still a teenager at just 19. In a pairing of prodigious minds, ARIA-nominated Australian violinist and MSO Young Artist in Association Christian Li performs this divine concerto – still younger than Mozart was!
  • While Mendelssohn’s official First Symphony was written when he was 15, he had in fact written thirteen already by the time he was 14, which are not counted in the official numbering system. This Symphony announced Mendelssohn as a serious compositional voice in Europe. With its explosive opening and lyrical melodies, it serves as a musical embodiment of the eagerness and energy of youth.
