The concert
Piers Lane OA is one of Australia’s finest pianists, with a career that’s taken him all around the world, playing on the finest concert hall stages. He’s also been a champion crusader for music-making back home, directing major festivals and collaborating with some of Australia’s top instrumentalists and composers.

Piers performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1; a youthful work for the composer, but still with plenty of punch and personality. Hearing Piers dance through the joyous final movement will be a memorable experience.

Then to the broad, open musical landscapes of Vaughan Williams and his evocative Fifth Symphony, dedicated to another great symphonist, Jean Sibelius. This symphony is all about the strings: rich textures, dark, autumnal hues, and great expanses of luscious melody.
