Eligibility and Instructions

Applications to the MSO Academy 2027 program are now open.

We are accepting applications for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, tenor trombone, percussion, violin, viola, cello and double bass. Bass trombone applicants are encouraged to apply, but are accepted on a case-by-case basis.

There is no age limit for applicants, though the opportunity is best suited to candidates just embarking on their careers as postgraduates and under the age of 35.

Both Rounds 1 & 2 will be via video audition. All excerpts for both rounds must be submitted at the same time.

Applicants successful in Round 2 will be invited to a further interview. 

  • Video Audition (Rounds 1 & 2) - applications due by 11:59pm Sunday 18 October 2026
  • Video Audition results notified by Friday 13 November 2026
  • Round 3 Interviews (online) - Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December 2026

    - CV/Resume outlining relevant experience and training, and a one-page cover letter. Applications without a CV and cover letter will not be considered.
  • Recorded audition and recording declaration form
    - To be sent via email to lei@mso.com.au
    -Each movement and excerpt must have an individual timestamp provided in a separate Word or PDF document.

Audition requirements

Video audition requirements

  • Auditions must be recorded unaccompanied
  • Recorded auditions must not be edited. Please do not apply reverb, compression, or any other effects
  • Recorded auditions must all be recorded on the same day, in the same venue
  • We recommend using a high-quality microphone in a quiet environment
  • All excerpts from both Round 1 and 2 must be prepared and submitted by the deadline. 
  • Each Round (excluding the Set Work) must be recorded as a single take. Please do not announce each excerpt. 
  • Please record each Set Work excerpt as a separate take. 
  • In the case of a duplicate Set Work requirement, please submit only one recording of the longest excerpt. 
  • Each recording should be submitted as separate files, with filenames clearly labelled – Round 1 Orchestral Excerpts, Round 1 Set Work, etc. 
  • If, during the recording session, you make a mistake and want to play something again, you may do so but please remember that under no circumstances should the recording be stopped or edited (other than specified).
