Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition
About this performance
Chief Conductor Jaime Martín brings the Orchestra to his home town of Santander as part of the MSO's UK & Europe tour.
Australian composer Margaret Sutherland was ahead of her time and excelled in a male-dominated field at home and abroad. Her powerful work Haunted Hills is both a lush picture of Melbourne's Dandenong Ranges and a reflection on the mistreatment of the area’s traditional owners – the Bunurong and Woiworung people of the Kulin Nation – upon colonisation.
Then, acclaimed Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili joins the orchestra for Tchaikovsky's captivating First Piano Concerto, flavoured with Ukrainian folksongs and bursting with virtuosity.
Finally, experience Mussorgsky’s vivid musical translation of watercolours and drawings by the composer’s friend, Viktor Hartmann. Mussorgsky’s work was later orchestrated by Maurice Ravel, who added a vast palette of symphonic colour when he orchestrated the suite, further adding to the evocative depictions of Parisian gardens, Roman catacombs and the majestic Great Gate of Kiev.
