About this performance

The MSO brings a nostalgic program of vivid melodies and kaleidoscopic colour to Melbourne Town Hall, joined by rising star soloist Emily Sun.

Your concert opens with Miriam Hyde’s Village Fair.

  • Hyde is one of Australia’s most respected composers, with works spanning the 20th century.
  • Originally written to be a ballet, Hyde was unable to access funding during wartime, so it instead became a concert work.
  • Village Fair captures a quaint idyllic village feel; it’s teeming with nostalgia, sprightly melodies and lyrical passages.

Following on is Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto.

  • Korngold has an enthralling history. After growing up as a celebrated child prodigy and composer in Vienna, he stayed in the US during the rise of the Nazis and became pigeon-holed as a film composer.
  • His amazingly colourful and delicate violin concerto is the first concert work he wrote after switching to film music. It carries all the warmth and richness that comes with late-romantic Viennese music and the glorious melodic strength he learnt from 1930s Hollywood.
  • This yearning violin concerto will be tackled by London-based violinist Emily Sun, who possesses an expansive resume with accolades such as the 2018 ABC Young Performer of the Year.

Post-interval, you are treated to Antonín Dvořák’s cheerful Eighth Symphony.

  • Composed over a whirlwind few weeks in his holiday home in Czech Republic, the symphony shows Dvořák’s love of the natural beauty of the Czech countryside and features many Czech and Slovak folk themes.
  • The symphony seamlessly moves through passages of melancholy and vigorous joy and is sure to delight.

Duration: approx. 105 minutes including interval
