Jonathon Coco began playing the double bass at 9 years of age, learning from Earle Hunter. In 2011, he went on to study for a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium under Damian Eckersley, where he was awarded the Corinna D’Hage Mayer Strings scholarship over multiple years.

In 2014, he was accepted into the Performance program at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), continuing his studies with Damien.

As a student, Jon was placed in principal roles with the Melbourne University Orchestra, the Melbourne Youth Orchestra (MYO), and the Australian Youth Orchestra. In 2016, he was the Principal Bass on the AYO international tour to Europe and China and was awarded the Ernest V. Llewellyn Memorial Award for String Players.

In late 2016 he successfully auditioned for the role of Associate Principal Bass with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for nearly seven years. In May 2024, Jon was successfully appointed Principal Double Bass with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

As a chamber musician, Jon has performed alongside ensembles and musicians including the Australian String Quartet, Tinalley Quartet, Anthony Marwood and James Crabb. Jon has been a performing artist at the Coriole Festival in McLaren Vale on multiple occasions.

Jon has appeared as a guest musician with the MSO, TSO, QSO, and Orchestra Victoria. While freelancing, he toured with artists including Andrea Bocelli, John Farnham, Olivia Newton-John, Delta Goodrem, Eddie Perfect, and Neil Finn.

As an educator, Jon has tutored at the Australian National Academy of Music, the Australian Chamber Orchestra Academy, the Australian Youth Orchestra, and the University of Melbourne.
