Sally-Anne Russell is an internationally acclaimed Adelaide-born mezzo-soprano and one of Australia’s most distinguished vocal artists. A multi-award-winning performer, she has appeared on leading concert platforms and operatic stages across twenty-seven countries, earning recognition for the richness, versatility and dramatic depth of her artistry.
Her extensive discography includes more than forty CD and DVD recordings with leading labels including ABC Classic, Chandos, Move Records, Toccata Classics, Naxos and Decca. With more than eighty operatic roles in her repertoire, she has performed works spanning the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and contemporary eras.
Russell has appeared with major festivals, opera companies, symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout Australia and New Zealand. International highlights include performances at the Carmel Bach Festival, Washington National Opera, Oper der Stadt Köln and Festival dei Due Mondi in Italy, as well as recital tours throughout Singapore, Japan, Canada and Europe.
Her repertoire encompasses the great sacred and operatic masterworks, including Handel, Bach, Mozart, Duruflé, Britten and Wagner. Recent and forthcoming engagements include Bach’s St Matthew Passion, St John Passion and Mass in B Minor, Mozart’s Requiem and Great Mass in C minor, Duruflé’s Requiem, Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Wagner’s Ring Cycle and recitals featuring Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder and Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergne and most recently Handel’s Serse.
Beyond the stage, Russell is dedicated to artistic leadership and mentorship. She is Co-Artistic Director of the Albury Chamber Music Festival, serves on the International Artistic Council of Canada’s Kathaumixw Festival, and chairs the Australian Chapter of the Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna.
