The General Music Director at Landestheater Coburg, Daniel Carter has been a Conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin since August 2019. In his first season in Berlin his performances included A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hänsel und Gretel, La Boheme and Les Contes d’Hoffmann.

In 23/24 Daniel Carter will make his debut at the Vienna State Opera (Die Zauberflöte) and return to the Deutsche Oper Berlin with a new production of John Adams’ Nixon in China. Furthermore, he is invited to Malmö Opera for a new production of Turandot.

In the 22/23 season he conducts Don Quichotte in Berlin, Siegfried, La damnation de Faust and Der goldene Hahn in Coburg and a New Production of Nixon in China at the Staatsoper Hannover. Concert appearances include the concert season in Coburg, as well as debuts with the Neubrandenburger Philharmonie and the Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie.

Highlights of the last season in Berlin included Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Carmen and Die Fledermaus, as well as Siegfried at Oper Leipzig, Pelléas et Mélisande at Bühnen Bern and his debut at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro. In Coburg there were productions of of Die Walküre – where he will conduct the new Ring Production over the coming seasons, L’Enfant et les sortileges/L’heure espagnole and The Rake’s Progress and numerous symphonic concerts.

In recent seasons he has given his Debuts at the Oper Köln (La Boheme), with the Münchener Kammerorchester, at Konzerttheater Bern (The Swiss Premiere of Kurt Weill’s Love Life and Pelléas et Mélisande), Theater Trier (Hänsel und Gretel), Theater Erfurt (Die Zauberflöte), as well as with the Akademie of the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

After his engagement in 2013 at the Hamburg Staatsoper, first as a Repetiteur, then as Conductor and Musical Assistant to Simone Young, Daniel became Principal Conductor at Theater Freiburg in 2015. In Freiburg he conducted a wide opera repertoire, including Cosi fan tutte, Carmen, La Boheme, Pelleas et Melisande, Die Sache Makropulos, Katja Kabanova, Eugene Onegin, Il Trovatore, L’Elisir d’Amore, Die Fledermaus, Orphee(Gluck/Berlioz), Mefistofele, I gioielli della Madonna (Wolf-Ferrari), Cendrillon (Massenet), Angels in America (Eötvös), Zaide/Adama (Mozart/Czernowin) and a wide range of world premieres and symphony concerts.

Daniel Carter studied Composition and Piano Performance at the University of Melbourne, Australia. During his studies he worked as Developing Artist Conductor and Musical Assistant to the Music Director at Victorian Opera. In 2012 he was awarded the Brian Stacey Award for Emerging Australian Conductors. This was followed by multiple engagements with Victorian Opera (including the Australian Premiere of Elliott Carter’s What Next?), Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, Sydney Theatre Company, the Sydney and Melbourne Festivals, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra.
