About the performance

In association with MSO’s 2021 Ensemble in Residence, Melbourne Ensemble.

Celebrate International Women’s Day with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and a selection of the finest composers through history. From Hildegard von Bingen to Deborah Cheetham AO, this program acknowledges and champions the rich voices of female musicians across time.

• “A significant disparity exists between the number of great female composers and how many get performed,” says Christopher Moore, on putting together the first of two programs for International Women’s Day 2021. “My interest was finding works that would sound good together, and there’s no shortage of great work! I’ve chosen music that I really genuinely like, and that should make for an incredibly compelling performance.”
• This one-hour performance will feature conversations with guest performers and members of the MSO. These will be led by Moore, an insightful and inspiring chamber music collaborator who has deftly conceived programmes that connect our musical past to the here and now.
• Moore has put together a “tour through the ages – starting with von Bingen’s Oh Branch and Crown – a sequence dedicated to the ‘Lady Saviour’ Virgin Mary, and ending with a brand-new work by Deborah Cheetham (co-commissioned with MSO’s ensemble-in-residence Melbourne Ensemble), with some trips to France, Germany, and America along the way.”
