About the performance

A musical winter warmer.

Let us warm your winter with Elgar’s magnificent Violin Concerto, Mussorgsky’s grand Pictures at an Exhibition and an exciting new work by MSO’s Composer in Residence, Deborah Cheetham AO.

Scottish sensation Nicola Benedetti, one of the most sought-after violinists of her generation, returns to the MSO to take up the challenge of Elgar’s superb concerto, under the baton of MSO Conductor Laureate, Sir Andrew Davis.

The MSO’s 2020 Soloist in Residence, violinist Nicola Benedetti was named BBC Young Performer of the Year in 2004, aged just 16. She studied at the renowned Menuhin school in Surrey and still a teenager, signed a £1 million recording contract. Now one of Britain’s most successful violinists, here Benedetti plays Elgar’s Violin Concerto, one of the most adored pieces of music in the British canon.

As a composer, Elgar’s artistic development was in contrast to these childhood prodigies. The son of a piano tuner, he was in his early forties when his work finally started to be noticed. No English composer before Elgar had produced a widely successful violin concerto, and the work stands as one of his greatest achievements. It has none of the patriotic bluster of his most famous works; the piece is haunting and enigmatic rather than pompous. Rather than the stiff upper lip, the piece is an unashamed outpouring of emotion.

The MSO will also perform the wonderfully evocative and intensely visual Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky. A piece inspired by the drawings of his friend, the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann, Pictures is a memorial masterclass in how to extract all the colour and drama an orchestra can provide.

Opening the 2020 Mid-Season Gala will be the world premiere of Deborah Cheetham’s latest work, Yirramboi (Tomorrow).
