About the performance
In the year of Beethoven’s 250th birthday, 2020 sees symphony orchestras across the globe celebrating the composer’s perennially popular and prodigious artistic output. On World Environment Day, the MSO will participate in international United Nations-led project to raise awareness and inspire our city to take a stance on climate change.
For Beethoven, nature was a place of relaxation, solitude and inspiration. Today, nature is under threat and humankind is on a course to damage our environment beyond repair. Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony musically depicts the harmonious unity between mankind and nature this special project seeks to champion worldwide.
The MSO is thrilled to welcome back towering international figure, Vladimir Ashkenazy. The irrepressible Ashkenazy has led the greatest musical ensembles in the world and has a long association with orchestral music in Australia.
Armenian star cellist, Narek Hakhnazaryan will join Ashkenazy and the MSO to perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. A showpiece for the cello soloist, the variations are played without a break, in a performance of subtlety and endurance.
A past winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, Hakhnazaryan’s interpretation of the Variations has been heralded as having “spectacular technical prowess that made even the most elaborate of the variations seem effortless”.
A suite of curriculum-linked pre-concert resources will be issued to all school ticket holders prior to your excursion, extending your school’s experience well beyond the concert itself!
This performance will also take place on World Environment Day, Friday 5 June
The MSO Mornings series is proudly supported by Ryman Healthcare.
