About the performance
Droplets, rivers, streams, oceans; water has long been a source of inspiration for all kinds of artists, particularly composers.
In this concert French conductor, Ludovic Morlot leads the MSO through a series of water-themed works, beginning with Liadov’s shimmering Enchanted Lake. You can hear the whistle of the wind in the rushes and the delicate ripples on the surface of the water, conveyed through gentle strings, harp, and woodwind.
Sibelius evokes the dance of sea nymphs in Oceanides: playful and innocent one moment, frothing and foaming into giant waves of sound the next. Britten’s ‘Four Sea Interludes’ from Peter Grimes are a darker, more psychological view of the sea, from the chilling first notes of Dawn, to the dramatic clash of Storm.
Marc-André Dalbavie’s La source d’un regard makes for a contemporary change, balancing shocking moments of brass and percussion with cool, misty atmospheres. All this builds towards the three symphonic sketches of Debussy’s divine aquatic masterpiece: La Mer.
