Respighi Ancient Airs and Dances: Suite No. 3
Rota Trombone Concerto
Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4

Event Duration: 2hrs

Master of the memorable melody, prince of musical passion, Tchaikovsky is one of the most widely performed composers in history. His Fourth Symphony finds him recovering from a disastrous marriage, and in this work of vivid emotional extremes, he attempts to put into music (as he explained it) “all those things for which words cannot be found but which arise in the heart and cry out for expression.”

Imagine the movies of Federico Fellini without Nino Rota’s music! The composer of the immortal scores for La Strada, , and La Dolce Vita (not to mention Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather) also wrote a number of concert works, including this captivating trombone concerto, which will be played by the MSO’s own Michael Bertoncello.

Under the direction of one of Australia’s finest conductors, Benjamin Northey, the concert also begins in Italy, as the composer of such orchestral spectaculars as Pines of Rome looks back affectionately at the music of the Italian Baroque, in a delightful suite for string orchestra.
