Mussorgsky arr. Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition
A selection of Russian masterpieces provides the perfect showcase for the talents of the brilliant young conductor Jakub Hrůša. Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s piano suite is famous for its spectacular imagery and thrilling orchestral colours. In his Second Piano Concerto, Rachmaninov bounced back from the depths of depression to create a work of unforgettable melodies which have made their way into the popular consciousness, ranging from the classic film romance Brief Encounter (1947) to the 1970s pop hit, All by Myself.
