About this performance
With a heroic burst of brass, a musical adventure whisks you away to far-flung places and times.
Our second Sidney Myer Free Concert of 2027 takes flight with Korngold’s theme to the swashbuckling 1940 film, The Sea Hawk. Surging ahead with confidence and verve, the work evokes windswept oceans and daring exploits in the rich, sweeping style that helped define the sound of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Staying with Korngold, the MSO welcomes Ukrainian Georgii Moroz (winner of the 2026 Singapore International Violin Competition) for the final movement of the composer’s Violin Concerto.
Dismissed at the time by classical toffs as a mere “Hollywood concerto”, it has since become Korngold’s most often performed work. The third movement blends glamour with breathtaking technical brilliance.
Selections from Prokofiev’s version of Romeo & Juliet provide an ending of heartbreaking musical storytelling.
Fresh from his position as Assistant Conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, our 2025 Cybec Assistant Conductor Leonard Weiss returns to the MSO to lead this summer special.
