About this performance
Felix Mendelssohn composed his Reformation Symphony as a way to honour the 300 years since the reformation from Catholicism to Protestantism, and the cultural and spiritual heritage of Lutheran Germany. It evokes an air of nobility and an atmosphere of affirmation and hope.
Mendelssohn was also credited with reviving interest in Bach’s music, which had fallen out of fashion by the 1800s. It’s easy to see why Mendelssohn was such a champion of Bach, with the festive Orchestral Suite No.4 as a prime example of the baroque composer’s genius.
