About this performance
From the effervescence of Haydn’s bird-like melodies to a sombre Shostakovich quartet dedicated to the memory of his first wife, this intimate program explores the contrast of light and darkness, and the dance between the two.
John Adams’ Book of Alleged Dances were written ʻfor steps yet to be invented’, with selections performed in honour of the composer’s 80th birthday.
Schulhoff’s Concertino, while more grounded in Czech folk dances, was also influenced by the jazz he heard while perusing a friend’s record collection.
