The music avoids overt drama. Instead, its power comes from sincerity and depth of feeling.
The first movement of Anton Bruckner’s Mass in E minor is one of the composer’s most inward and atmospheric creations.
Here is a mass that is not like his other ones – those are symphonic works – whereas the Mass in E minor is scored for the unusual combination of 8-part choir and a 15-piece wind and brass ensemble, no strings. Though the complexity and grandeur remain, this piece is influenced by both Renaissance polyphony and Wagner – quite the inventive feat. It works though, moving seamlessly between moments of intimate prayer and majestic affirmation.
From this, the MSO Chorus weaves a powerful spiritual journey, one that culminates in a plea for peace and an invitation to reflect, revere and rest.
