Mozart Piano Concerto No.20*
Shostakovich Symphony No.4
About this performance
If you’re the type of listener who likes to experience the full force of the orchestra, this concert is for you. Our stage will be packed with musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performing alongside next-generation talent from the Australian National Academy of Music, led by Chief Conductor Jaime Martín. Sitting in Hamer Hall, the colossal scale of this combined ensemble will envelop you in the sounds of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.4. The composer declared his work be a product of his “great thoughts and great passions”. So great were those passions that his symphony inspired both awe and controversy, delaying its premiere by more than two decades. It has survived many decades more.
Finnish virtuoso and Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music, Paavali Jumppanen joins the Orchestra to perform Mozart's gripping Piano Concerto No.20. Full of spellbinding theatrics, Mozart's masterpiece weaves breathtaking technical brilliance through stormy drama and tender lyricism.
