Terms and Conditions for Submission

The below outlines the terms governing the submission of musical works to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO)'s Open Score program. By submitting a composition, the Composer agrees to the following terms and conditions:

1. Selection

  • The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) retains the sole and absolute discretion in the selection of compositions for the Open Score program. The MSO is under no obligation to select any particular submitted work for recording or performance.
  • The MSO makes no promise or guarantee that each submitted work will be recorded and/or publicly performed.
  • The Composer will not utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to create the submitted work, or submit an arrangement or copy of a previously written work.

2. Rights and Permissions

  • The MSO holds the right to perform, record and broadcast (non-commercially, i.e. via social media) any submitted work that is selected for the Open Score program.
  • The Composer grants the MSO permission to arrange submitted works where necessary, solely for the purpose of score and part preparation for recording. This permission is non-exclusive and limited to the scope of this program.
  • The MSO will not claim copyright, exclusivity, or recording rights over the underlying musical composition. Copyright remains with the Composer.

3. Composer Input and Compensation

  • No payment or fee will be provided to selected composers for Open Score.
  • Once a composition has been submitted and selected, the Composer will not be permitted to make any further changes, revisions, or alterations to their work.
  • The Composer will not have input or creative control over the recording process undertaken by the MSO.

4. Publicity and Usage

  • The Composer grants permission for the MSO to publish their name and a recording of their work on the MSO's social media channels and/or website.
  • The MSO reserves the right to use any works recorded as part of the Open Score program for non-commercial use, specifically for the MSO's own marketing, publicity, archival, and promotional activities.

5. Feedback

  • The MSO is not obliged to provide individualised feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
