Open Score is a community composition project created as part of the MSO’s 120th anniversary, inviting the people of Melbourne, Victoria and beyond to contribute their own musical response to a shared theme: Sense of Place.

The composer writes:
"Daisy Chain" is a piece composed for strings, inspired the simple joy of threading daisies together outside in the warmth of the sun. A childhood activity many of us have fond memories of - little faces with yellow flower crowns adorning their head, the crisp scent of the stems and bitter petals.
The way a simple activity with your loved ones and the touch of nature can leave an impression on you from a very young age. The ovals of my primary school, the local park, and even the weedy lawn outside a neighbouring friend's house offered a sense of belonging within my community, both people and place.
The piece starts with a slow build – the learning curve of a new activity and the challenge of less-than-coordinated fingers. Perhaps a nod to the weariness of a long day, or the boredom of being a child with nothing "interesting" to do...
I make use of counterpoint, staggered entries, and weaving melodies to help visualise the daisies coming together to create a whole new creation, and the imaginative world we use our new crown within is represented by a fast paced, joyous dance. Listen also for the chirps of nearby birds, and the keen chatter between excited children.
Following the thrill of play with a new creation in hand, the piece smooths into a peaceful lilt of a satisfied mind and body, the warmth of community and the pride of a child who has created something beautiful.
