A new online destination for fine music concerts and premium events

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is back on stage and now online, launching MSO.LIVE – an exciting new digital platform bringing virtual concerts, special events and musical experiences from the MSO, Australian arts companies and some of the world’s great orchestras, to a membership of music lovers.

Fresh new and historical MSO concerts will be available each month, including upcoming exclusive December highlights recorded in Melbourne:

From 9 December | MSO.LIVE: Pictures at an Exhibition

From 17 December, 7.30pm | MSO.LIVE: Tina Arena

From 19 December, 7.30pm | MSO.LIVE: A Perfect End to 2020

From 21 December, 6.30pm | MSO.LIVE: Messiah (highlights)

These new recordings will sit alongside performances from the biggest names in classical music, and small-medium Australian arts organisations. From this month, MSO.LIVE will feature* Australian-exclusive* performances from MSO friends and international collaborators such as the London Symphony and Royal Concertgebouw orchestras and renowned pianist Lang Lang, with more to follow in 2021.

The first digital concert on MSO.LIVE will centre on Modest Mussorgsky’s renowned work Pictures at an Exhibition (orch. Yu). Led by MSO Principal Conductor in Residence, Benjamin Northey, the piece is particularly poignant as it has been orchestrated by Australian-Chinese composer, Julian Yu. This program was specially-curated for the MSO’s return to performance, and features the first movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Beethoven’s Romance No.2. The MSO’s own soloists for the occasion are MSO Principal Clarinet, David Thomas and Concertmaster, Sophie Rowell.

Sophie Galaise, Managing Director, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra said she was delighted to be launching MSO.LIVE at a time when audiences are adapting to new musical experiences.

‘‘MSO.LIVE is about creating unique moments to share with our audiences, as well as providing the opportunity to stay connected with Australia’s premier orchestra from the comfort of home – whether in Melbourne, regional Victoria or further abroad. We have seen such a thirst for online classical concerts and virtual musical encounters throughout the year, and MSO.LIVE has been developed with our audiences – both established and new – in mind.

“We are privileged to be launching MSO.LIVE with an exciting December line up including one of Australia’s most prestigious vocalists, Tina Arena and some of Australia’s finest comedians. Working with the best artists from all genres is in our DNA, and is part of what sets the MSO apart. I am excited for this programming approach to carry through to MSO.LIVE,’’ said Ms Galaise.

One of Melbourne’s favourite daughters, Tina Arena AM, returns to the stage in an exclusive concert for MSO.LIVE. Tina cherishes the opportunity to collaborate with and support her hometown orchestra. “I was born and raised in Melbourne and I sense what the amazing musicians of the MSO have gone through this year. To be a part of their return is an immense honour”, she said.

Recorded in late-November, as Melbourne was emerging from lockdown, the resulting performance is of its time – as it is for the ages. Ms. Arena and the MSO perform songs from her distinguished career, including the hits; Help My Heart, Chains, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina (Evita), REM’s Everybody Hurts and, for the first time, Caruso (Lucio Dalla) – a new addition to Ms Arena’s recorded repertoire.

Comedian Eddie Perfect headlines MSO.LIVE: A Perfect End to 2020, alongside Sammy J, Michelle Brasier, Tripod, Ali McGregor, Christie Whelan Browne and more. Recorded this month, the concert politely raises the finger to a year that has tested us all. “The MSO is part of Melbourne’s identity. Performing these songs with the backing of the city’s biggest and best band is a total thrill, and one that I’m excited to share with the world”, Eddie Perfect said.
