The MSO's biggest performance of all time is coming in 2020

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will stage its biggest performance of all time in 2020 with the monumental Mahler 8: Symphony of a Thousand.

MSO Conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis leads the combined might of 130 orchestral players, a cast of international singers and a massed choir totalling 1000 performers on stage at Margaret Court Arena on Saturday 24 October, 2020.

Managing Director Sophie Galaise said the MSO’s Mahler 8 marked a major international cultural collaboration between some of the great classical musicians and companies of the world.

“Artists from the USA, United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and around Australia descend on the city of Melbourne for this larger-than-life musical celebration,” Ms Galaise said.

“It will be Melbourne’s musical event of the year.”

Gustav Mahler’s explosive 8th Symphony is a cosmic swirl of orchestral power, sublime melody and the spiritual majesty of the human voice. It is one of the most important and revolutionary musical works of the 20th century.

Mahler 8: Symphony of a Thousand will bring to a sensational close the MSO’s Mahler cycle under Sir Andrew Davis – a legacy event unmissable for fans of orchestral classics.

“Performances of Mahler’s 8th Symphony tend to be rarities simply because of the huge forces required,” Sir Andrew Davis said.

“It will of course be the final chapter of the journey that the MSO and I have made through all of Mahler’s symphonies during my time as Chief Conductor.

“It is a huge cosmic vision and I am counting down the days until I can share this truly transformative experience.”

The cast includes Canadian soprano Erin Wall, Dutch mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn and Mildura’s own international opera sensation Siobhan Stagg.

This epic concert event is so gigantic it’s rarely performed on this scale, leaving the complete wonder of the original unheard for years at a time. The MSO’s Mahler 8 complete with 1000 performers will see the masterpiece staged as it was at the 1910 premiere. It will be the work’s first Australian performance in a decade.

A piece of this size demands a venue to match, with Margaret Court Arena to provide the substantial setting for 1000 performers and an audience of thousands of music lovers from across the nation and overseas. World-class producers and technical experts will ensure a brilliant acoustic and visual experience to enhance the MSO and Mahler’s extraordinary music.
