The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the newest members of the Cybec 21st Century Young Composers Program, with four young Australians selected for the prestigious project in 2019.
Melody Eötvös, Lewis Ingham, Matthew Laing and Victoria Pham will each create a 10-minute work for orchestra, under the guidance of an established Australian composer. The MSO celebrates these new compositions with a showcase to be held in early 2020.
One participant will then be named the MSO Cybec Young Composer in Residence for 2021.
Open to Australian Residents and Citizens living in Australia under the age of 35, the Cybec Young Composer’s Program has been providing opportunities for young Australian composers since 2003. The Cybec Foundation, through its founder Roger Riordan, has supported the program since the beginning, allowing more than 50 aspiring composers from across the country to have works commissioned and performed by the MSO.
Melody Eötvös (b.1984) studied piano and cello, graduating from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music, Composition (Honours) before completing a Master of Music from the Royal Academy of Music, London and a Doctor of Music from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, USA. She is currently a Composition and Aural Skills lecturer at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
Lewis Ingham (b.1993) initially studied an undergraduate degree in screen composition at Box Hill Institute, and has since completed a Graduate Diploma in Music (Composition) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. He was the 2018 Grainger Museum Composer in Residence and is currently completing a Master of Music (Composition) at the Melbourne Conservatorium under the supervision of Elliott Gyger.
Matt Laing (b.1988) is a violist and composer, who also studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. He took part in the Flinders Quartet’s Composer Development program in 2018 and earlier this year the group premiered his work Out of Hibernation. He has been mentored by the great Australian contemporary composer and fellow violist, Brett Dean.
Victoria Pham (b.1996) studied composition under Carl Vine AO at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and is currently co-Artistic Director and co-Founder of the experimental music art-sound collective Sonant Bodies. The 2020 Cybec Young Composer in Residence will be announced at MSO’s 2020 Season Launch on 7 August.
