The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is set to tour regional Victoria this October with a series of concerts in Ballarat, Horsham, Hamilton and Warrnambool. The finest players, along with the finest repertoire will take to the stage over four big nights.
British clarinet virtuoso Michael Collins returns to play with and conduct the MSO in a riveting series of works, including the dynamic Ornamental Air, written for him especially by MSO’s Composer in Residence Elena Kats-Chernin.
Also on the program is Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds and one of Mendelssohn’s Konzertstück, in which Collins will be joined by Brisbane-born Lloyd Van’t Hoff.
Rounding out the evening of sumptuous classical music is Beethoven’s Symphony No.8, which the composer fondly referred to as his ‘little Symphony in F’.
During their time on the road, MSO musicians will be mentoring budding Beethoven’s during workshops with local school groups.
MSO Managing Director, Sophie Galaise, said that the MSO is committed to taking symphonic works to regional communities.
‘Touring across Regional Victoria is a wonderful way to take the sounds of the MSO to new audiences who may not have otherwise had the chance to experience how beautiful live orchestral music can be. It’s a wonderful chance for our orchestra members to explore Victoria, and it gives our audiences the chance to enjoy a full symphonic orchestra live, and up close,’ Ms Galaise said.
