East meets West in a luminous concert of contrasts when the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra celebrates Lunar New Year.
Conducted by Tan Dun, Oscar-winning composer and conductor, the Lunar New Year concert is a much loved part of the MSO’s calendar. It successfully blends so many contrasting performance elements into a unique performance experience: art and entertainment, music and cinema, ritual and spontaneity, tradition and innovation, ancient Chinese culture and icons of European classical music.
The main work in the 2016 program is the Melbourne premiere of The Map, Tan Dun’s multimedia concerto for video, cello and orchestra. Traditional influences abound in this moving work inspired by the ancient stone drumming of the Hunan Province.
Evoking a feeling of ‘home’ is integral to Lunar New Year celebrations and audiences of many cultures will be made to feel at home with the MSO and Tan Dun in this not-to-be missed concert.
