The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is inviting amateur musicians over the age of 18 to join the Orchestra for Symphony in a Day, a larger-than-life performance of symphonic greats this June.
Symphony in a Day will see 100 amateur musicians – playing string, percussion, brass and woodwind instruments – rehearse and perform alongside members of the MSO at the Melbourne Town Hall, on Saturday 9 June.

For many amateur musicians the opportunity to meet, rehearse and perform with the MSO is a life-long dream, and this initiative is designed to deepen the connections between the MSO and the Victorian musical community.

Registrations are open until Monday 12 March; confirmation of a place and other program details, including repertoire and schedule, will be communicated to the successful musicians in April.
“Applicants to date include people who have studied their instrument to a high level but now work in another profession. Many of them are active members of a local community orchestra,” said MSO Education Manager Bronwyn Lobb.

“Each person has their own special story and connection to the MSO, and it is these connections which we hope to build upon and celebrate as people from all backgrounds come together to share their love of orchestral music,” she continued.

Rehearsals for Symphony in a Day will take place throughout the afternoon of Saturday 9 June and be followed by a performance for the general public at 8:30pm, which will be the culmination of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s five-day Education Week residency at the Melbourne Town Hall.

Please note that places offered will be subject to instrumentation requirements and capacity. All applicants must be over 18 years of age.
