Tuesday 29 May – Friday 1 June 2018, Hamer Hall

Calling community orchestral musicians aged 18+ – become a member of the MSO for a day!

This is your opportunity to join the world-class players of the MSO under the baton of Assistant Conductor Tianyi Lu for rehearsals and sectional coaching culminating in a main stage performance at Hamer Hall. If you are grade 6 level or above, are aged 18 or over as of May 2018 and would like the experience of a lifetime, we would love to hear from you.

Positions will be allocated to eligible applicants on a first-come-first-served basis and are subject to payment of the $30 participation fee.


Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36


Wednesday 30 May: 7.30pm – 10pm (Sectionals)
Thursday 31 May: 7.30pm – 10pm (Rehearsal)
Friday 1 June: 7.30pm – 8.30pm (Performance)

Sectionals will be held at ABC Southbank Centre, 120 – 130 Southbank Boulevard. Rehearsals and performance will take place in Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne. Applicants will need to make their own way to and from all venues.

Applications close at 5pm on Monday 30 April
Offers will be sent by 5pm on Wednesday 2 May
Participation fee must be paid (to secure your position) by 5pm on Friday 4 May
Practice parts will be sent to you upon receipt of your payment.

Please read the following carefully before submitting your application.
  • MSO Side by Side Symphony is an intensive and immersive opportunity open to keen, amateur orchestral musicians aged 18 or over as of May, 2018.
  • The program will include 2 hours of sectional coaching, 4.5 hours of rehearsal and a performance on the Hamer Hall stage.
  • Limited places are available and applicants of the appropriate standard (minimum grade 6 level or above) will be allocated positions on a first come, first served basis.
  • MSO is committed to a supportive environment which will challenge participants, to develop and extend their orchestral experience.
