Jamie Miles is a 21-year-old violist and composer. He is a recent graduate of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), where he studied viola with Caroline Henbest. Jamie is completing the final subjects of his Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) at the University of Melbourne. He is an academist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2026 and will also appear as guest tutti viola with the Australian Chamber Orchestra on their July-August national tour. As a composer, Jamie is an associate artist with the Australian Music Centre, and he was one of four participants selected from over 150 national applications for the composition program at AYO National Music Camp 2026.

Jamie has performed extensively in orchestral, chamber and solo contexts. He was principal viola of the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from 2023-2025 and of the Australian Youth Orchestra from 2022-2025, including for their 2025 International Tour. In 2023, he was selected as the only Australian competitor in the ARD (German Broadcasting Association) International Music Competition in Munich; one of 43 violists chosen from 153 international applicants. He has also received prizes in several national competitions, including First (Richard Mills) Prize at the 2023 Melbourne Recital Centre Bach Competition, Second Prize at the 2022 3MBS Victorian Young Performer of the Year Awards, and he was a finalist in the 2024 Melbourne Recital Centre Great Romantics Competition.

Jamie began pursuing composition more seriously in early 2025, following several years of writing sporadically alongside his performance training. Since then, he has completed and premiered three works: Viola Octet (The Commuter's Fantasie), Elegy for Strings, and Poem for Chamber Orchestra. The Octet and Elegy were premiered at ANAM, and Poem at AYO National Music Camp. The Commuter's Fantasie received a Gold Award at the 2025 Johannes Brahms International Online Music Competition. Earlier works for solo viola have also received national recognition: Caprice for Solo Viola (2020) was awarded first prize in the Australian Guild of Music's UNLOCK'D composition competition, and Suite for Solo Viola (2019) was recently included in the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) viola syllabus at Certificate of Performance level.
