Since their acclaimed first Australian tour in 2002, guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan have acquired a reputation for enthralling audiences with the energy of their performances and the breadth of their repertoire – embracing genres from classical and jazz to contemporary music from around the world.
They have been touring internationally since 2003 – performing regularly throughout Europe, the UK, Asia, Australia and the USA, as well as appearing in Brazil, South Africa, India and the Middle East. Notable appearances include performing alongside the great Flamenco guitarist Paco Peña and supporting Canadian singer-songwriter k.d. lang on her Ingénue Redux 25th Anniversary Tour.
In addition to performing much of the standard classical repertoire, they have expanded the guitar repertoire through new arrangements, commissions and their own compositions. Their deep appreciation and understanding of a broad spectrum of musical styles has also resulted in many collaborations in both notated and improvised music traditions, as well as performances in traditional and unconventional settings, from projects with orchestras and duo performances in iconic classical venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Vienna Konzerthaus to arts, jazz and folk festivals and WOMAD.
The brothers have released more than a dozen albums as a duo – most recently Amistad – and between them, they have received four ARIA awards as well as 24 ARIA Award nominations. Their recording of Bach concertos with Benjamin Northey and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra won Best Independent Classical Album in the 2019 AIR Awards.
