Principal Double Bass
Steve Reeves was appointed Principal Bass with the MSO in 1989. Prior to this he held the position of Associate Principal with Orchestra Victoria and Principal Bass with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. He has also played with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and Sydney Symphony. Steve freelanced in the USA playing with orchestras in New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania and also in Holland and Norway.
He also enjoys his rare opportunities to play chamber music and perform as a soloist.
For many years, Steve taught bass at the Victorian College of the Arts, Australian National Academy of Music and Monash University. He began his studies in Adelaide with John Foster, continued in Sydney with Max Claxton and Dave Ellis and later studied at the Hartt School of Music with Gary Karr and Leslie Parnas, at Juilliard with Eugene Levinson, Norwegian State Music School with Knut Guettler and at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam with Anthony Woodrow.
He has had a long association with the International Society of Bassists and has presented at several ISB conventions giving recitals, working with the young bassists program, competition judge and competition chair as well as being a headline presenter at the 2009 Convention in Pennysylvania.
In 2012 Steve was invited to the Texas Christian University International Bass Festival where he presented a recital, masterclasses and was co-chair of the orchestral competition.
