Frequently Asked Questions

Who sings in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus?

The MSO Chorus is made up of 120 singers from all walks of life, and from all over Melbourne and far beyond.

Where and when are rehearsals held?

Rehearsals are held between 7.30pm and 10pm every Monday evening in the Iwaki Auditorium at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra headquarters in the ABC Southbank Centre (corner of Sturt St. and Southbank Boulevard), with frequent additional rehearsals scheduled as necessary. Concerts are planned many months in advance and a detailed rehearsal schedule is provided at least six months ahead of time.

What is the commitment involved in being a member?

We expect our members to participate in at least 80% of our concerts in each year, and to attend at least 80% of the rehearsals for each program. We have an option of a ‘leave of absence’ period if necessary for any reason, without the need to reaudition to rejoin.

How do I join?

Membership is by audition, and we hold regular auditions for prospective new members.

Do I need to be able to read music?

Yes! As we have a limited amount of rehearsal time for each project, it is necessary for all Chorus members to be able to read music.

May I observe a rehearsal before I audition?

We welcome potential new members to observe a rehearsal, and thereby experience the Chorus at work, before deciding whether or not to audition.

When are the next audition dates?

We hold auditions several times a year, and these are scheduled according to demand. The next round of auditions is likely to take place later this year in late November or early December. If you are ready to audition and would like to register your interest then please complete the audition application form, or for further information call (03) 8646 1103 during business hours or email chorus@mso.com.au.

What should I expect at the audition?

Auditions last up to ten minutes, and you will be asked to sing:

  • A piece of your choice that is classical in nature, lasting approximately three minutes. This should be something that you know well, feel confident singing, and which best shows off your vocal range: it can be a solo work (aria, art song etc.), a part of a choral work, or even a traditional folk tune or verses from a hymn.
  • Vocal range exercises and aural tests
  • A short piece of sight reading
What does membership cost?

There is no annual membership subscription. The costs of vocal coaching, rehearsal, concert and music are also covered.

Testimonials from current members

‘Singing with the MSO Chorus means gathering as individuals and together, creating a truly extraordinary sound. That’s why it’s music for my soul!’

Helen Staindl, alto and School Principal

‘After many years’ absence from choral singing due to my business career, I joined the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus three years ago and have loved every moment. We have a wonderful repertoire, the highest musical standards, terrific choral leadership and delightful people who come together for the joy of singing. The added benefit of working with a world-class symphony orchestra is the icing on the cake.’

Ted Davies, bass and Management Consultant
