As this beautiful program demonstrates, the classical spirit embraced a vast range of emotional expression, particularly when the composer in question was Mozart. He is alleged to have composed his so-called 'Kegelstatt' Trio while he was playing skittles; if so, it is another example of his extraordinary genius that he could create something so sublime for a chamber combination then unknown – piano, clarinet and viola – while trying to make a strike!

If the word Divertimento suggests something decorative, or even frivolous, it is a misleading label at best for a work described as the greatest string trio ever written, Mozart's Divertimento K563.

In its own right, Schubert's Notturno has become one of Australia's favourite pieces of chamber music, and as such earned a place in the ABC's Classic 100. In the context of this concert, Schubert's haunting vignette makes a beautiful companion-piece to the Mozart masterworks surrounding it.
