In this special Metropolis program, MSO musicians explore modern ensemble music from around the world.

Hungarian composer György Ligeti, had many stylistic antecedents, and an ability to change his musical voice to suit his needs. A landmark in modern chamber music, he said of his trio for Violin, Horn and Piano (1982) that it was “half-ironic, half deeply serious, conservative/postmodern …it cannot be pigeonholed neatly into any stylistic category; it has odd angles and trick floors that do not fit in anywhere.” In other words, like so much music by this extraordinary composer, it defies categorisation.
