In 2010 the MSO Chorus proudly presents a new series of three concerts in the Melbourne Recital Centre and St Patrick’s Cathedral, and performances in venues in New South Wales and regional Victoria. Six Australian premieres from the most powerful voices of today, the Latvians Peteris Vasks and Arturs Maskats, and Frenchman Thierry Machuel; the first performances of Calvin Bowman’s ‘...so far far away...’ co-commissioned with Stockholm’s exquisite St Jacob’s Choir; and as if that wasn’t enough, music from Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil and Liturgy of St John Chrysostom and our first performance of Brahms’ beautiful and powerful A German Requiem accompanied in the composers arrangement for two pianos.
These Chorus adventures complement those we share with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2010; the intoxication of Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe, the agonies of Britten’s War Requiem, The Bells of Rachmaninov and the much-loved Messiah.
In music and in performance we journey from Latvia to Newport, from Stalin’s purges to the battlefields of France, from Russian Orthodox to Baptist, from Albury to Brighton and back to Melbourne – vast emotional terrains, searing narratives and great singing.
