MSO/ArtPlay Main Ensemble

MSO ArtPlay Ensemble

ArtPlay is an initiative of the City of Melbourne, located at Birrarung Marr behind Federation Square. Established in 2003, ArtPlay’s program focuses on young people working alongside professional artists. The MSO Community Outreach program has been associated with ArtPlay since its inception.

ARTPLAY ENSEMBLE

The MSO ArtPlay Ensemble is a performance group made up of children aged between 8 and 13 years, and four musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The Ensemble is limited to between 24 and 28 places. There is only one intake of students each year and participants are expected to commit to workshop dates (already set) during school holidays for the whole year. The Ensemble is open to children playing orchestral instruments, and participation is not dependent on prerequisite levels of musical experience and/or knowledge. Members are chosen from free Open Workshops, held at the beginning of each year.

The program involves creating music as well as performing, with each project leading to the composition and performance of an original piece of music. We invite parents and friends of the participating musicians to the final performance. The process is a working collaboration between young people and the professional musicians.

Up to four places in the MSO ArtPlay Ensemble are subsidised for those wishing to take part but not able to do so for financial reasons. Performances of the Ensemble’s music will be presented at ArtPlay and other city venues as advised by the MSO and the City of Melbourne. Members of the Ensemble have the opportunity to attend MSO rehearsals and concerts through the year, as well as meetings/ discussions with visiting local and international artists.

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2011 MSO ARTPLAY ENSEMBLE ARE DUE BY 26 NOVEMBER 2010. WORKSHOPS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN EARLY 2011.
