A wide variety of instruments, all of which are either beaten, scraped or shaken to produce sound, belong to this category. They are used to provide a rhythmic accompaniment, to highlight a passage, or to create a mood.

Using sound of indefinite pitch in this way probably began with our ancestors stamping their feet and clapping hands, beating their shields with spears, or rattling dried seed pods to highlight events on ceremonial occasions.

Through experience, they would have discovered that the longer or larger the object, the deeper the sound it produced and vice versa ; the harder the object beaten, shaken or scraped, the stronger the vibration and the louder the sound.
